• Introduction

Southeast University (SEU) is one of the universities of Project 211 and Program 985 that is financed by the Chinese Central Government. The origin of the School of Electrical Engineering at Southeast University (SEUSEE) can be traced back to 1923, when it was founded as a department at National Central University. It is one of the three oldest engineering disciplines at SEU. After 90 years of development, electrical engineering (EE) related disciplines and specialties remain the main subjects of SEE and keep growing. SEUSEE has become one of the key breeding base of China's first-class electrical talents and innovation, which enjoys a high academic reputation both in China and around the world. A good many famous electrical scholars and experts have taught in SEE, e.g. Wu Yulin, Chen Zhang, Wu Darong, Cheng Shi, Yang Jianchu, Yan Yishi, Min Hua, Qian Zhonghan, Zhou E, Chen Heng.

SEE has established a relatively complete system of discipline. The first-level discipline of electrical engineering is enlisted as Jiangsu province’s first-level key disciplines and national first-level-discipline fostering key station, among which two second-level disciplines (electrical machine and equipment, power system and its automation) are Jiangsu province’s second-level key disciplines. “New energy generation and utilization”, a discipline set up independently by SEE, is Jiangsu province’s advantage discipline. SEE is a first-level-discipline doctoral degree authorization point and post-doctoral mobile station for electrical engineering, which has eight second-level disciplines .i.e. electrical machine and equipment, power system and its automation, power electronics and power transmission, high voltage and insulation technology, electrical theory and new technology, the application of electronics and motion control, electrical information technology and new energy technology, etc.

SEE is rich in high-level faculty. Among the 87 faculty and staff members, there are 65 full-time teachers, 22 professors, 26 associate professors and 31 doctoral supervisors. 90% of the full-time teachers hold Ph.D. degrees, and 50% of them have overseas study experience for half a year or more. SEE boasts two part-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a IEEE Fellow, a winner of the national outstanding youth fund, a candidate for "new century excellent talents supporting plan" hosted by the ministry of education, seven winners of Jiangsu province’s "333 high-level talents training project", ten members of "six talent peak" high-level talents, five “outstanding young and middle-aged backbone teachers” of Qinglan Project, five “young and middle-aged academic leaders”, and three teachers that enjoy the "special government allowances of the state council”.

SEE boasts comparatively complete research conditions, including a servo control technology center dedicated to engineering research by the ministry of education, the “smart grid technology and equipment” key laboratory of Jiangsu province, the electric power engineering experiment center of Jiangsu province, the electrical equipment and automation engineering technology center of Nanjing, the smart grid research center and wind power research center of Southeast University. Apart from this, there is a smart grid dynamic simulation laboratory, intelligent substation laboratory, Rockwell automation laboratory, MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC automation laboratory, power electronics laboratory, electrical machine laboratory, micro &special motor laboratory. SEE attaches great importance to the "government-industry-university-institute" cooperation. Together with government, enterprises and institutions, SEE has built up SEU new energy automobile research institute of Yancheng, SEU smart grid research institute of Zhenjiang, SEU - Hong Kong Johnson Electric joint research center, SEU - ELEFIRST SCIENCE&TECH. information technology joint research center, SEU – HOPERUN smart power distribution technology joint research center, SEU - NICETOWN ELECTRIC power electronics research center, etc.

The school adheres to the coordinating development of basic research, applied basic research and development. Since 2011, SEE has undertaken more than sixty National High-Tech Program (“863” Program, “973” Program) projects and National Natural Science Foundation projects, 63 provincial projects; 558 papers are collected by EI, 221 papers are collected by SCI, including three ESI highly cited papers; The school has applied for 647 invention patents, and 152 patents have been authorized. In terms of scientific research awards, SEE has won 13 provincial scientific research awards as the first winners, including a first prize for natural science by the ministry of education, six second prizes for provincial science and technology progress, six third prizes for provincial science and technology progress.

Cultivating qualified electrical talents is the fundamental mission of SEE. SEE is director of the higher learning for EE education mentoring committee by the ministry of education, and promotes the reform of talent cultivation in EE field together with counterparts home and abroad. "SEU-Siemens Electric outstanding engineers joint training base", "SEU-National Instruments outstanding engineers joint training base", and 11 enterprise graduate workstations of Jiangsu province, have witnessed the constant improvement of talent-training quality. The school enrolls over 160 undergraduate students, 130 graduate students and 30 doctoral students each year. Electrical engineering and its automation as undergraduate education of SEUSEE is a renowned specialty at Jiangsu province, which is the first to gain the professional certification of the ministry of education’s engineering category in June 2006. In 2013, SEUSEE became the first college of EE to obtain engineering education accreditation after China's accession to the Washington Agreement. "Electrical machine" at SEE is entitled as national excellent courses, "power system analysis" is high quality courses of Jiangsu province, “introduction to electrical engineering and its automation” is national excellent video courses. Based on SEE, there is a national experimental demonstration center named "electrical and electronic experimental center" and a national engineering practice education center named "Wiscom Tech. electrical engineering practice education center". Six of the text books written by SEE are included in the "11th five-year plan" national planning educational materials, two are included in the "twelfth five-year" national planning educational materials. Students of SEE have achieved fruitful grades in international and domestic competitions, e.g. special-class award of "Bao Steel outstanding student" by the ministry of education, outstanding prize of international mathematical contest in modeling (MCM/ICM), first prize of Freescale intelligence car competition, special-class award of the national robot competition in east China division and so on. In the past five years, SEE has been awarded the first prize for national teaching achievements once, and outstanding award for teaching achievements of Jiangsu province twice.

SEE adheres to internationalization so as to strengthen itself. The school holds the "bringing in and going out" strategy, and keeps a stable cooperation with the university of Sheffield, RWTH aachen university in Germany, the Ohio state university, Australia's monash university, the university of Hong Kong and other overseas well-known colleges in related disciplines, including the exchange of scholars to give lectures, exchanging students and conducting joint research, etc. In recent five years, SEE has hosted high-level international academic conferences, such as seminar of the smart grid of China and the United States, for five times; The school hires eight overseas famous scholars (such as Richard A. Williams from the university of Birmingham) as visiting professors, and five well-known domestic experts (such as Ni Ming, "one thousand talents plan" distinguished expert) as part-time professors to lecture or teach at SEUSEE.
